Winter 2016/17 Cuisine
With a skiers’ buffet breakfast to start your day, afternoon tea to welcome you ‘home’, and 4- or 5-course evening meals with wine and coffee included to complete the evening, our chalets and Chalet Hotels provide by far the best value accommodation in the Alps!
We set high standards for our cuisine, and train our staff extensively before the season starts, to ensure that Esprit guests will enjoy every meal.
For six days of the week in both chalets and Chalet Hotels, our staff prepare all your meals for you as described on these pages. The majority of Esprit parents feel that young children can inhibit the dinner-party atmosphere at evening meals, especially if they are over-tired, so children under 13 years are served High Tea at around 5.30pm in our chalets and Chalet Hotels alike. *They are not then permitted to join adult dinner, as they are generally happier either getting some rest ready for tomorrow’s adventures, or if 6 years old or more, joining our childcare staff in Cocoa Club.
Over Christmas and New Year period we also offer special festive menu’s.
In our Chalet Hotels and ‘Xtra’ Chalets, children aged 8 and above may now choose to join adults and older siblings at the adult dinner time of 7.30pm for a supplement of £39 per child.
On their one day off per week, your host in chalets will prepare a Continental-style breakfast which will be left for you to help yourselves, whilst in Chalet Hotels, a full buffet breakfast will still be served to you as normal. That evening, you and your family then have the chance to eat out in one of the local cafés or restaurants, which your Esprit Representative will be happy to help you arrange.
A good breakfast is essential on a ski holiday, so we provide both a cooked breakfast including your choice of bacon, eggs, sausages and beans, as well as a continental selection with a choice of cereals or porridge, fruit juices, plentiful tea, coffee and bread (and croissants in France), cold meats, cheese and preserves, which is normally presented buffet-style for you to help yourself. On our staff's one day off a week, only the continental breakfast will be provided.
Our Chalet Hotel teams can also prepare a packed lunch for you on request, at a small local charge. For those keen to keep their Eurospending to an absolute minimum, this is the ideal way to keep your costs down!
The traditional ‘welcome home’ after a day on the slopes will be laid out for you in your chalet or Chalet Hotel, ready for your return, every day except the team’s one day off each week. A good cup of tea or coffee is the perfect accompaniment to a delicious slice of freshly home-baked cake – different every day and our Chalet Hotels also feature a selection of cakes for you to choose from.
Children’s High Tea
High Tea provides children under 13 with a healthy menu, but tailored more towards children’s tastes than our main adult dinner, and puréed food is also always available for infants on request. Parents are asked to accompany their children under 36 months at High Tea please, whilst children from 3-12 years will be supervised by Esprit staff.
Adult Dinner in Chalets
In all our chalets, our four-course dinners for adults (and children 13 and over only) start with canapés and an apéritif, followed by an appetiser, main course and dessert. The meal is accompanied by a choice of wines, unlimited during the meal service, with freshly chilled water also always available, and followed by complimentary coffee or tea with chocolates to round off your evening.
Culinary Choice’ Adult Dinner in Chalet Hotels
Chalet Hotels, we offer our ‘Culinary Choice’ adult dinners six nights per week, comprising five courses, with a choice of menu for your enjoyment. Adults (and children 13 and over only) will be asked to choose their evening meals at breakfast for that evening, from a choice of two or three varied dishes, changing each day, always including a vegetarian option for each course, and accompanied by our complimentary wines. Courses are as described above for chalets, plus a local cheeseboard will also be available each day as the fifth course to complete your evening’s dining.
In our Chalet Hotels and 'Xtra' Chalets, children aged 8 and above may not choose to join adults and older siblings at the adult dinner time of 7.30pm for a supplement of £39 per child.
New winter 2017/18 Cuisine
Over the summer, we have been carefully considering all of your comments in regard to our food and drink offerings. The conclusion is that ‘evolution, not revolution’ is what is being asked for, so we have taken on board the most frequent themes being raised, and we are proud to present the following updates to our food & drink service for Winter 17/18 season on wards.
You’ve increasingly been suggesting that canapés in chalets are seen as “a bit old-fashioned” by some, whilst others have noted that smaller chalets with open—plan living/dining areas don’t always provide the best space to serve aperitifs and canapés.
We have also heard that many of you would prefer something “a little classier”, as one guest put it, than the usual chalet aperitifs such as ‘Kir’ or ‘wine + flavouring’.
Therefore for the Winter 17/18 season onwards in all our chalets, we will no longer serve canapés, and will upgrade your aperitif to a glass of Prosecco every evening before dinner, to whet your appetite for our 3-course evening meals, comprising a starter, main course and dessert.
In contrast to traditional chalets, all our Chalet Hotels have their own residents’ bar and lounge, so the canapés work much better in this environment, with space to meet and mingle with fellow guests before dinner. However following on from your feedback we will be upgrading the apéritifs to a daily glass of Prosecco, setting the scene for a pleasant and relaxing evening.
A frequent piece of guest feedback from our Chalet Hotel guests however has been that, as much as they enjoyed the 5-course dinners, for most guests, five courses was “frankly a bit too much" and with the little ones asleep upstairs the whole evening took a little too long.
So we are ringing the changes here too, and moving to 4-course dinners – still with a choice at every course – but to round off the meal, a cheese plate will now be available every day as an alternative to dessert. Hopefully this way we can make sure everyone is happy, whether you prefer a sweet or savoury to finish your dinner!
Apart from these, all other aspects of our chalet and Chalet Hotel cuisine remain as in the current 16/17 season
Christmas & New Year Celebrations

All our chalets and Chalet Hotels offer traditional fare for Christmas dinner, with roast turkey and all the trimmings, Christmas pudding, mince pies, crackers, party hats and of course a pre-dinner glass of Champagne plus a lively, fun atmosphere for all the family.
This is the one meal that all families share together regardless of children’s ages, so in some properties the dining tables can be quite crowded, but this adds to the festive ambience of all celebrating together!
A special festive menu followed by Champagne is also served on New Year’s Eve, but this is for adults only (and those aged 13+ of course), unless you are staying in a Family Dining chalet.
Staff Day/Night Off
Once a week, you have an opportunity to eat out and enjoy a local Alpine Restaurant on our staff's day off. Don't forget, you can still take advantage of our free Baby-Listening/Child Patrol Service on this evening.

Wednesday all season
Vegetarian options are always on our ‘Culinary Choice’ menu in our Chalet Hotels, and are available in our chalets if you advise us in advance. Other special diets can generally be catered for at a cost of £35 per person per week. Any dietary requirements must be advised to us at the time of booking in order for us to be fully prepared.
Family Dining Chalets
For those families who prefer to eat together with their younger children, we offer our Family Dining option in any chalet of up to 12 beds, if you book the whole chalet for your own party, subject to chalet suitability. Everyone then eats together in the evening, starting at 6.30-7.00pm. The meals are based on our adult menus, with some flexibility for younger taste buds, although not a complete ‘à la carte’ choice!
The additional charge for changing meals to Family Dining is £39 per child. (Chalet Valentine in La Rosière and Chalet Oskar in Selva are always Family Dining chalets and no supplement applies).
Esprit Wine Selection
Thank you for all your much appreciated feedback over recent seasons on the wines selected for all our Chalets and Chalet Hotels. It’s good to hear that you feel we are very much on the right track here, with our four varied choices in chalets and five in Chalet Hotels going a long way to ensure there is something to enjoy for every taste and palate.
Certainly your letters and questionnaires totally endorse our decision many years ago to move Esprit well away from the boxed wine or ‘plonk in a carafe’ still served by some other chalet companies, to good quality, bottled wines which genuinely enhance our menus.
So the wine lovers here in our UK team are once again looking forward to the wine-tasting event we hold every autumn in conjunction with our French wine partners, Nicolas and Véronique Perret. They are based in the distinctive Savoie wine region, producing their own wines as well as blending and bottling other varieties from all around France, and as a Burgundy-trained wine expert, Nicolas is well qualified to help us choose a tempting selection of wines for the coming winter.
Taking on board your wine notes, ideas and suggestions from last season, the range will once again aim for variety within our two selected reds and two contrasting whites, plus a light, refreshing rosé in all our Chalet Hotels.
